Under de fem Grand Cru Classé ligger Cru Bourgeois klassifikationen, der i årevis har været mildt sagt kaotisk.
Indtil 2003 måtte både slottene fra den oprindelige klassifikation i 1932 (444 slotte) og alle de slotte der er medlemmer af Le Syndicat des Crus Bourgeois (335 slotte pr. 1. febrauar 2001) have betegnelsen Cru Bourgeois stående på etiketten. Nogle slotte var med på begge lister, andre ikke, så det totale billede var ret uoverskueligt.
Det kunne desuden ikke bruges til så meget, hvis der stod Cru Bourgeois på etiketten. Ifølge vores erfaringer fra glasset var nogle af vinene hamrende kedsommelige. Andre ragede op i Grand Cru Classé niveau.
Det var meningen, at der skulle rådes bod på denne forvirring og utidssvarenhed med Cru Bourgeois klassifikation fra juni 2003. Det var også meningen, at den skulle revideres hver tiende år.
Men kaos fortsatte: 77 forsmåede slotsejere klagede over, at udvælgelsesjuryen ikke var tilstrækkelig upartisk, idet andre Cru Bourgeois-slotsejerne sad med i udvælgelsesjuryen.
I november 2004 blev den nye klassifikation så delvis ophævet, idet Bordeaux's forvaltningsdomstol gav medhold i klagen.
I marts 2007 blev det afgjort i retten, at klassifikationen skulle annulleres. Hvorefter det var forbudt at anvende betegnelsen!
I maj 2009 kom Alliance Cru Bourgeois med en ny klassifikation, der skulle gælde fra og med årgang 2008. Nyt var at: 1) et uafhængigt smagepanel skal hvert år ved en årlig blindsmagning bedømme, hvilke vinslotte, der er værdige til klassifikationen, 2) de to højeste niveauer i klassifikationen fra 2003, Crus Bourgeois Exceptionnels og Crus Bourgeois Supérieurs, udelades, så vinen fremover enten er Cru Bourgeois eller ikke.
Nogle af de vinslotte, der i 2003 måtte klassificere sig som Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel, besluttede ikke at ville være med i den nye klassifikation. Det drejede sig om Château Chasse Spleen, Château les Ormes de Pez, Château de Pez, Château Potensac, Château Poujeaux og Château Siran. De dannede i stedet en forening, Les Exceptionnels, som de ville benytte i forbindelse med deres markedsføring.
Blandt de andre Crus Bourgeois Exceptionnels tilsluttede Château Phélan Ségur sig 2003-klassifikationen (men de er ikke med i den nyeste officielle klassifikation), mens Château Haut-Marbuzet ikke ville være med hverken i klassifikation eller Les Exceptionnels-foreningen.
Siden 2010 er der hvert år foretaget en ny klassifikation. De kan ses på www.crus-bourgeois.com. I 2014 blev den nyeste officielle 2012 klassifikation offentliggjort. 267 slotte er med:
